When you replace a windshield, you have a few options for the glass itself. OEM, OEE, and aftermarket. The terms get used loosely, and not every shop is clear about which one they’re installing. Here’s the difference. OEM glass OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. It’s the same glass the factory installed when your vehicle was built. The brand stamp on the corner will match the brand that supplies the manufacturer. OEM glass is the most expensive option and is typically only available through dealerships, though some independent shops can source it. OEE glass OEE stands for Original Equipment Equivalent. It’s made to the same specifications as OEM, often by the same manufacturers, but sold under a different brand. OEE glass meets or exceeds the Department of Transportation safety standards and is what most reputable shops use as their standard. Aftermarket glass Aftermarket is a broader category that includes lower-priced glass from various manufacturers. Quality varies. Some aftermarket glass is essentially OEE rebranded. Some is noticeably thinner, has poor optical clarity, or doesn’t fit the original frame properly. What we use 502 Auto Glass uses OEM and OEE quality glass on every replacement. We don’t install bargain-basement aftermarket. If you have a preference for OEM specifically, tell us when you call and we’ll source it for you, though it may take a few extra days and the insurance allowance may not cover the full cost. FAQ

Does insurance pay for OEM glass?

Some policies do, most don’t. Comprehensive coverage typically pays for OEE quality glass. OEM may require an additional out of pocket payment.

Is OEE as safe as OEM?

Yes. OEE meets the same DOT safety standards and is often made by the same companies that supply OEM.

How do I know what glass was installed?

Look for the brand stamp in the lower corner. Reputable shops will tell you what brand they used.
