Most drivers don’t think about their auto glass coverage until they need it. A rock kicks up on the highway, a crack spreads overnight, or someone breaks into your car. When it happens, the first question is usually the same: does my insurance cover this?
The answer depends on the type of coverage you carry.
Comprehensive Coverage
Comprehensive auto insurance is the most common way windshield replacement and auto glass repair gets covered. This is the portion of your policy that handles damage not caused by a collision, things like weather, theft, vandalism, falling debris, and yes, rock chips and cracked windshields. If you carry comprehensive coverage, your auto glass damage is almost always included. You may owe a deductible depending on your policy, but in many cases the cost of a windshield replacement is covered in full or close to it.
Full Glass Coverage
Some insurance companies offer a full glass or zero-deductible glass add-on. This is a separate line item on your policy that specifically covers auto glass repair and replacement with no deductible at all. Not every provider offers it, and it varies by state, but if you have it, a windshield replacement could cost you nothing out of pocket.
Liability-Only Policies
If you carry only liability coverage, which is the minimum required by law in Kentucky and Indiana, auto glass damage is not covered. Liability insurance covers damage you cause to other people and their property. It does not cover your own vehicle. In that case, you would be paying out of pocket for any glass repair or replacement.
Kentucky and Indiana Coverage
Kentucky does not have a law requiring insurance companies to waive deductibles for windshield replacement, so what you pay depends on your policy and your provider. Some policies include glass coverage with no deductible, others apply your standard comprehensive deductible. Indiana follows a similar structure. The specifics come down to your individual policy, which is why it helps to have someone who knows the process on your side.
